Acceptable Use

This Acceptable Use Policy sets out the terms between you and us under which you may access our website (the site). This Acceptable Use Policy applies to all guests and registered users of the site.

Your use of the site means that you accept, and agree to abide by, all the policies in this Acceptable Use Policy, which supplement our site Terms.

1 Information about us

1.1 The site is owned and operated by Skipton Building Society (we, us, our, the Society).

1.2 Our principal office is The Bailey, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 1DN.

1.3 We are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority under registration number 153706 for accepting deposits, advising on and arranging mortgages and insurance.

1.4 We are registered as a Data Controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office with registration number Z6453436.

1.5 We are a member of the Building Societies Association

2 Permitted and prohibited uses

2.1 Our philosophy is to allow the community to grow organically, with minimum intervention from us. However, we want this space to be a safe, enjoyable and helpful environment for our members.

2.2 You may use the site only for lawful purposes and for domestic and private purposes only. You may not use the site:

2.2.1 in any way that breaches any applicable local, national or international law or regulation;

2.2.2 in the course of business or for any commercial purpose, in particular to advertise or attempt to solicit business, either in the name of any business you represent or by impersonating an independent third party;

2.2.3 in any way that is unlawful or fraudulent, or has any unlawful or fraudulent purpose or effect;

2.2.4 for the purpose of harming or attempting to harm minors in any way;

2.2.5 to send, knowingly receive, upload, download, use or re-use any material which does not comply with our content standards (as set out below);

2.2.6 to transmit, or procure the sending of, any unsolicited or unauthorised advertising or promotional material or any other form of similar solicitation (otherwise known as spam); and

2.2.7 to knowingly transmit any data, send or upload any material that contains viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time-bombs, keystroke loggers, spyware, adware or any other harmful programs or similar computer code designed to adversely affect the operation of any computer software or hardware.

2.3 You also agree:

2.3.1 not to reproduce, duplicate, copy or re-sell any part of the site in contravention of the provisions of our site Terms;

2.3.2 not to access without authority, interfere with, damage or disrupt:

(a) any part of the site;

(b) any equipment or network on which the site is stored;

(c) any software used in the provision of the site; or

(d) any equipment or network or software owned or used by any third party;

2.3.3 not to disguise or conceal the IP address of the connection used to access the site or to contribute any content.

2.4 You must not use the site, and in particular the interactive sections, to:

2.4.1 state, suggest or imply that you are authorised or approved to provide financial advice;

2.4.2 give investment advice by way of business, or make financial promotions;

2.4.3 post any material that could have the effect of manipulating the market value of any investment; or

2.4.4 impersonate any person, or to misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any person, including us.

2.5 You may not post complete or incomplete hyperlinks to any external or third party websites, save where we provide our express and specific consent for you to do so.


3 Interactive services on the site

3.1 Interactive services, such as blogs and forums, may be made available to registered users, through the site (Interactive Services).

3.2 It is strictly prohibited for anyone under 18 years of age to use the Interactive Services.

3.3 We may withdraw, suspend or change the site without notice. We will not be liable if the site is, or any of the Interactive Services are, unavailable or if you are unable to access any part of it. We will however, in instances of routine maintenance, post notification of this on the site.


4 Moderation

4.1 We reserve the right to moderate the content on the site from time to time, including any Interactive Service. However, we are under no obligation to oversee, monitor or moderate any content posted to the site, and we expressly exclude our liability for any loss or damage arising from the actions of a user or group of users in contravention of our site Terms or this Acceptable Use Policy, whether the content is moderated or not.

5 Content standards

5.1 These content standards apply to any and all material which you contribute to the site and a failure to comply with them will be regarded as a serious breach of this Acceptable Use Policy and our site Terms.

5.2 Where you contribute content to the site you must ensure that:

5.2.1 any facts included in such content, or information in such content which appears, is suggested to be or is implied to be a fact, are true and accurate;

5.2.2 any expressions of your opinion(s) or belief(s) included in content you contribute are genuinely held by you;

5.2.3 all content you contribute is in:

(a) the spirit of and directly relevant to the site;

(b) compliance with all applicable laws; and

(c) not potentially liable to bring the Society into disrepute;

5.2.4 any content that you contribute does not infringe any third party intellectual property rights (i.e. the intellectual property rights of any other person), including but not limited to copyright, database right, moral rights or trade marks of any other person, or promote, share or link to any such material;

5.2.5 any content that you contribute must not contain, reference, imply, link to or otherwise relate to:

(a) any material which is defamatory of any person;

(b)any material which is obscene, offensive, hateful or inflammatory;

(c) any sexually explicit material;

(d) any material that promotes violence;

(e) any material that promotes discrimination of any form, whether based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, age or otherwise;

(f) any material that promotes any illegal or unlawful activity;

(g) any material that relates to or promotes any form of gambling;

(h)any material which is likely to deceive any person; and

(i)any material which could be considered threatening, abuse or invade another’s privacy, or cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety, or otherwise be likely to harass, upset, embarrass, alarm or annoy any other person;

(j)any material political in nature or promoting a political cause or agenda

5.2.6 the contribution of such content is not made in breach of any legal duty owed to a third party, such as a contractual duty or a duty of confidence.

5.3 You should carefully consider what information you include in content before you contribute it, as you may be identifiable from it. In particular, please carefully consider any personal details you might include about you or someone else. The inclusion of the following is strictly prohibited within any content:

5.3.1 your contact details, including but not limited to email address(es), postal address(es), Society membership number, telephone or fax number(s), social networking pages/identifiers (for example your Twitter handle/user identification);

5.3.2 any financial details, such as your bank account numbers, sort code, or any other payment service details (for example, your Paypal login).


6 Suspension and termination

6.1 We will determine, in our discretion, whether there has been a breach of this Acceptable Use Policy through your use of the site.  When a breach has occurred, we may take such action as we deem appropriate.

6.2 Failure to comply with this Acceptable Use Policy constitutes a breach of the site Terms upon which you are permitted to use the site, and may result in our taking all or any of the following actions:

6.2.1 immediate, temporary or permanent withdrawal of your right to use the site and any Interactive Services;

6.2.2 immediate, temporary or permanent removal of any posting or material uploaded by you to the site;

6.2.3 issue of a warning to you;

6.2.4 legal proceedings against you for reimbursement of all costs on an indemnity basis (including, but not limited to, reasonable administrative and legal costs) resulting from the breach;

6.2.5 further legal action against you; and

6.2.6 disclosure of such information to law enforcement authorities as we reasonably feel is necessary.

6.3 We exclude to the fullest extent permitted by law our liability for any actions taken in response to breaches of this Acceptable Use Policy. The responses described in this policy and our site Terms are not limited, and we may take any other action we reasonably deem appropriate.


7 Changes to the Acceptable Use Policy

7.1 We may revise this Acceptable Use Policy at any time by amending this page. You are expected to check this page from time to time to take notice of any changes we make, as they are legally binding on you.

7.2 Some of the provisions contained in this Acceptable Use Policy may also be superseded by provisions or notices published elsewhere.
